Why springs break

Garage door spring repair: why springs break

Garage door spring repair is the most common fix we do, because the spring does the lifting. A garage door spring is a coil under heavy torque that counterbalances the weight of the door, which is why a good door can be raised with one hand. The opener only guides it. When the spring breaks, the full weight of the door lands on whatever is holding it.

Most homes have torsion springs, mounted on a steel shaft over the door opening. Some have extension springs running along the horizontal tracks on each side. Both wear the same way: each open and close is one cycle, and a spring is built for a set number. A standard torsion spring is usually rated around 10,000 cycles, with longer life springs rated higher. A family that uses the garage as its front door can reach that number in a few years.

A broken spring is easy to spot. You hear a loud bang from the garage, the door lifts a few inches and stops, the opener strains or the cables hang slack. You may also see a gap in the coil, usually in the middle of the spring.

Do not try to wind or reset springs yourself. The torque stored in them can break bones.

On every spring job

What we check on a spring job

Spring size and match

Spring wire gauge, inside diameter and length have to suit the weight of your door. A wrong spring makes the door heavy or lets it fly up.

Replace as a pair

If your door has two springs, we replace both. The second one has the same number of cycles on it and usually fails soon after the first.

Cables and drums

A snapping spring often frays the lift cables or knocks them off the drums. We inspect both and replace what is worn.

Bearing plates and shaft

We check that the center bracket, end bearings and shaft are straight, because a bent shaft ruins a new spring.

Balance after the fix

We set the tension, then test that the door stays where we leave it at the halfway point with the opener disconnected.

The process

How a spring replacement goes

  1. 01

You call and describe what happened

Tell us what you heard and where the door stopped. Please leave the door as it is, because lifting a door with a broken spring can drop it fast.

  2. 02

We come out and check it

We confirm which spring failed, measure the remaining one, and inspect the cables, drums, rollers and opener connection.

  3. 03

We explain what we found and the price

You get the cause, the options and a quote before any work begins.

  4. 04

    We replace the springs

We fit the new springs, wind them to the right tension, lubricate the moving parts and test the balance. A spring swap is usually done in one visit.

Common questions

Garage door spring questions

Can I repair a garage door spring myself?
No. Replacing a spring means winding it with bars under high torque, and a slipped bar can cause serious injury. We handle the winding with the right tools, and strongly advise homeowners not to attempt it.
How much does it cost to replace a garage door spring?
The price depends on the type of spring, the size and weight of the door, whether one or both springs go, and whether cables or other parts need replacing. A technician gives you an upfront quote before any work begins.
Can you manually lift a garage door with a broken spring?
Technically yes, but it is risky. Without the spring, a door can weigh as much as a couple of hundred pounds, and it can drop if you let go. Keep people and cars clear of it and wait for a technician.
Should both springs be replaced at once?
Yes, in nearly every case. Springs wear together, so when one has broken the other is at or near the end of its cycle rating. Replacing both avoids a second failure soon after.
How can I make new springs last longer?
Regular lubrication and balance checks help, and routine maintenance catches worn cables and loose hardware early. Higher cycle springs are an option if the door is used several times a day.
Is a broken spring an emergency?
It is urgent in the sense that the door cannot be used safely, and a car may be stuck inside. It is not safe to wrestle open, so leave it and call us.

Spring snapped and the door won't open?

Leave the door down and tell us what happened. We'll come out, check the spring and cables, and explain the fix and the price before any work starts.
