Why it happens
Why a garage door comes off its track
A garage door off track is a door whose rollers have left the steel rails that guide it, so one side hangs or the whole door sits crooked. It is unsafe to move. The door still weighs far more than it looks, and the springs and cables are under tension, so pushing, pulling or running the opener can twist the track further or drop a panel.
The common causes are a car bumping the door or the track, a broken or slipped lift cable, a bent track from an impact or a loose bracket, and a roller that has worn out and slid off the rail. Tight garages in older Queens and Brooklyn blocks, and narrow driveways in Bay Ridge, Ridgewood and Staten Island, make an accidental bump with a bumper or a mirror more likely. A door that drops on one side after a cable breaks will often jump the rail as well.
What we check
What we check and fix on a door that is off track
Is the door secured
First we make the door safe by clamping it or lowering it in a controlled way. We never force a crooked door to move.
Lift cables and drums
A snapped garage door cable is a frequent reason a door goes off track. We replace a broken cable and check the other one, since both wear together, and make sure it sits properly in the drum.
Track condition
We look for bends, kinks and gaps in the track. A mild bend can often be straightened and the track re-aligned. A creased or twisted track is replaced.
Rollers and hinges
Rollers that have popped out or worn flat are replaced, and bent hinges are swapped. A panel that was strained when the door slipped is checked for cracks.
Springs and opener
A shifted door can leave the springs out of balance. We check spring tension and balance, and disconnect or reset the opener limits so it does not force the door.
The process
How a garage door off track repair goes
-
01
Stop and tell us what you see
Leave the door where it is and keep people and cars clear of it. Tell us which side is hanging, whether a cable looks loose, and what happened just before.
-
02
We come out and inspect it
A uniformed technician secures the door and examines the track, rollers, cables and panels to find what actually pulled it off.
-
03
We explain the repair and the price
You get a plain explanation of what failed and an upfront quote before any work begins. Parts, door size and the condition of the track and panels shape the price.
-
04
We put it back on track and test it
We straighten or replace the track, set the rollers and cables, rebalance the door and run it through full cycles. Repairs are backed by a parts-and-labor warranty.
Door hanging crooked?
A door hanging crooked in the opening will not fix itself and should not be forced. Tell us what it looks like and we will say what to do until we get there.
