What the job involves

What garage door roller replacement involves

Garage door roller replacement means swapping the small wheels that carry the door up and down inside the vertical and horizontal tracks. A sectional door has a roller at each end of every hinge, so a typical door runs on somewhere around 10 or more of them. When they wear, the door gets loud, shudders on the way up, and may stick or tilt in the track.

The cause is usually plain wear. Steel rollers with exposed bearings dry out, flatten and chew into the track. Cheaper nylon rollers crack. Dirt and old grease turn into grit, and a door that gets used several times a day, as many city garages do, wears them faster. In damp, salty spots near Jamaica Bay or the water in Staten Island, rust shortens their life further.

Worn rollers also strain everything else. The opener works harder, hinges flex, and a seized roller can pull the door out of line. If your door rattles, grinds or jumps in the track, the rollers are one of the first things we check.

Where we start

What we check before replacing rollers

Roller type and wear

We look for flat spots, cracked wheels, loose stems and bearings that no longer turn freely. Steel and nylon wear differently, and we tell you which you have.

Track condition

Bent, dented or loose tracks cause the same noises as bad rollers. New rollers on a damaged track will not fix the sound, so we check alignment first.

Hinges and brackets

A roller sits in a hinge, and a cracked or loose hinge lets the door twist. We tighten or replace them in the same visit.

Replacement options

Sealed nylon rollers are the quieter choice and are what we usually recommend for a house door. Steel suits some heavy doors. We explain the difference and the price of each.

Springs and cables

Because the door is open for this work, we check the springs and cables for wear too, so you hear about it now and not after a snap.

The process

How a roller job goes

  1. 01

You call and describe the noise

Tell us whether it rattles, grinds or jerks, and whether the door stops or tilts. That helps us tell rollers from a track or opener fault.

  2. 02

We come out and check it

We disconnect the opener, run the door by hand and inspect every roller, hinge and the full length of the tracks.

  3. 03

We explain the findings and the price

You get the quote before any work begins, with the roller options laid out. A roller job is usually finished in a single visit.

  4. 04

    We replace and test

We swap the rollers, lubricate the hardware, and run the door through full cycles to confirm it is quiet and level.

Door shaking, grinding or scraping as it moves? Tell us what you hear and we will tell you whether it sounds like rollers.

Common questions

Garage door roller questions

How do I know it is the rollers and not the opener?
Disconnect the opener with the release cord and move the door by hand. If it still grinds, scrapes or moves unevenly, the problem is in the rollers, tracks or hinges and not the opener. If it glides freely by hand but struggles on the opener, the opener or the door balance needs a look, and we can check for opener faults as well.
Can I replace garage door rollers myself?
The top and middle rollers can be changed with ordinary tools, but the bottom roller sits in a bracket that is under spring tension through the lift cable. Undoing it without releasing that tension can cause serious injury. We handle the bottom brackets as a matter of course, and we take no shortcuts with the tension.
How is the price of roller replacement worked out?
The price depends on how many rollers the door has, which type you choose, whether hinges or track also need work, and the size of the door. A technician gives you an upfront quote before any work begins.
How long does it take?
A full roller change on a standard residential door is usually done in one visit. Time grows if tracks need straightening or hinges need replacing.
Is it safe to use the door meanwhile?
With a mild rattle, yes, though every cycle adds wear. If the door catches, tilts or jumps in the track, stop using it, because a roller that jams can pull the door out of the track.
Is the work covered by a warranty?
Yes. Our repairs and installations are backed by a parts and labor warranty.
