Why sensors fail

Garage door sensor repair and why the door reverses

Garage door sensor repair is the fix for a door that will not close, or starts down and reverses. Federal safety rules require every modern opener to have a pair of photo-eye sensors, one on each side of the door opening and mounted no more than 6 inches off the floor. They send an invisible beam across the doorway. If something breaks that beam, the door stops and goes back up.

When the sensors fail or drift, the opener cannot tell whether the way is clear, so it refuses to close the door. The usual causes are a bracket knocked out of line by a bumper or a bin, a dirty lens, direct sun shining into the receiving eye, a pinched or cut wire, or a sensor that has simply died. Spiders and webs across the lens do more harm than most people expect.

A tell-tale sign is the opener light blinking after you press the button, with the door staying open. Another is a door that closes only while you hold the wall button down. Both point at the safety beam, not at the springs or the motor.

What we check

What we check first

Sensor alignment

Both eyes have to face each other at the same height. We check the indicator lights on each, then correct the bracket until the beam is steady.

Lenses and sunlight

We clean the lenses and look at whether low morning or evening sun is hitting the receiving eye, which can mimic a blocked beam.

Wiring

The thin low voltage wire runs from each sensor to the opener. We follow it for staples that pinch it, cuts, loose terminals and corroded connections.

The sensors themselves

If the beam holds when it should and still fails, the eye has gone bad. We replace the pair together, since old and new units can mismatch.

Safety reversal

After the repair we test that the door reverses when it meets an obstruction and when the beam is broken. That test is what the sensors exist for.

The process

How a sensor repair goes

  1. 01

You call and tell us what the door does

Say whether it will not close at all, bounces back up, or closes only when you hold the button. That points us to the sensors quickly.

  2. 02

We come out and check it

We look at the lights on both sensors, test the beam, and check the wiring and the bracket mounts.

  3. 03

We explain what we found and the price

You hear the cause and the options, and receive the quote before any work begins.

  4. 04

    We fix and test it

We realign, clean, rewire or replace the sensors, then run the door through several cycles and test the reversal.

Common questions

Garage door sensor questions

Why will my garage door not close but the opener runs?
The door is almost certainly being stopped by the safety sensors. When the beam is blocked or the sensors are misaligned, the opener runs, the light blinks, and the door stays up. Wipe each lens with a soft cloth and check that neither bracket moved. If the lights stay off or flicker, it needs a technician.
Can I bypass the sensors?
We do not recommend it. The sensors are what stop the door from closing on a child, a pet or a car. A door that closes with them disabled is unsafe, so we fix them and do not bypass them.
How is the price of a sensor repair worked out?
It depends on whether the sensors need only alignment and cleaning, new wiring, or a new pair, and on your opener model. A technician gives you an upfront quote before any work begins.
How long does a sensor repair take?
Most sensor repairs are finished in one visit. Realignment and cleaning are quick, while running a new wire along a long run takes longer.
Could the opener be the problem, not the sensors?
Sometimes. If the sensors check out and the door still will not close, the opener's travel limits or logic board may be at fault. We test the sensors first because they are the most common cause, and move on to the opener itself if they are fine.
What should I have ready when I call?
Know what the door does when you press the button, and whether the lights on the sensors are on, off or blinking. The opener brand, if you can read it off the unit, also helps.

Tell us what it does when you press the button and we'll come out, find what the sensors are reacting to, and explain the fix before any work starts.
