When to replace

When a new garage door makes more sense than another repair

Garage door installation is usually the answer when the door itself has worn out, not just one part of it. Panels that have rotted, rusted through or cracked, a frame that has twisted, track that keeps bending, or a door that has been patched several times all point the same way. So does a door that is simply too old to take a modern opener safely, or one that leaves the garage cold and loud.

In the older brick homes of Bay Ridge, Ridgewood and Astoria the opening is often an odd size, and the garage may be a detached structure behind the house with a narrow drive. Across Staten Island and eastern Queens, attached garages are more common and the door is the largest moving part on the front of the house. Either way, a new door starts with measuring the opening properly, then choosing a door that fits it.

Your options

The options you will be offered

Insulated steel sectional doors

The most common choice for a house. Steel panels with an insulated core keep the garage quieter and a little warmer in winter, and the surface can be painted or textured. Thicker insulation costs more but runs smoother and resists dents better.

Carriage-house style

These look like swing-out wood doors but lift like any sectional. They suit older brick and stone homes where a plain flat door would look wrong. Some use a wood-look finish on steel to avoid the upkeep of real wood.

Real wood doors

Wood gives the richest look and can be built to fit unusual openings. It needs regular sealing or painting and is heavier, so it needs the right springs.

Full-view glass and aluminum

A frame of aluminum with glass panels lets in daylight and suits a workshop or modern home. Privacy glass is available where neighbors can see in.

Opener, track and springs

A new door should come with the right springs for its weight and an opener that matches it. We install the track, hardware and springs for the new door, and can set up an opener so everything is tested together.

The process

How a garage door installation goes

  1. 01

You call and describe the opening

Tell us what the old door is made of, what is wrong with it, and what you want from the new one. Mention anything unusual about the opening, like a low header or a sloped floor.

  2. 02

    We come out and measure

A uniformed technician measures the width and height of the opening, the headroom above it and the room at each side and behind, because those decide what door and track will fit.

  3. 03

We explain the choices and the price

You get the door options in plain words and an upfront quote before any work begins. Door size, material, insulation, the springs it needs and whether you want an opener all change the price.

  4. 04

We remove the old door and fit the new one

The old door comes out, the new track and springs go in, and the sections are stacked and hung. We balance the door, set the opener if one is included, and test every cycle. Installations are backed by a parts-and-labor warranty.

Thinking about a new door?

If the old door has you patching and fixing every few months, it may be time to price a new one. Tell us what you have and we will say honestly whether it is worth replacing.

Common questions

Questions before you replace a garage door

How do you measure for a garage door?
We measure the width and height of the finished opening, then the headroom above the opening, the room on each side of it, and the depth of the garage behind. Those five numbers decide which door and track will fit. We take them on the visit, so you do not need to measure beforehand.
What is the price of a new garage door based on?
Door size, material, insulation level, windows or glass, the springs needed for the weight, and whether an opener is included. Removing and hauling the old door is part of the job. The technician gives an upfront quote before any work begins, so you see the full price first.
Is it worth replacing a garage door?
It is when the door is rusted, rotted, twisted or has been repaired repeatedly, or when it is noisy and uninsulated in a garage you use as a room. A single broken spring or cable is not a reason to replace the whole door. We will tell you which case you are in.
Can I replace the door without replacing the tracks?
Sometimes. If the existing track is straight, the right size and matches the new door, it can be reused. Mismatched or bent track usually has to go, since a new door on worn track will not run smoothly. We check on the visit.
Can I install a garage door myself?
It is possible, but it is not a one-person job in practice. Panels are heavy and awkward, and the torsion springs hold enough stored force to cause serious injury if they are wound wrongly. Most people have a technician handle the springs even when they do the rest.
How long does an installation usually take?
A standard single or double door is normally installed in one visit. Custom sizes, a wood door, or a rebuilt opening can take longer. We tell you what to expect when we quote.
Do I need approval before changing the door on my house?
In most of the city you do not. If your home sits in a designated historic district, such as Brooklyn Heights, exterior changes visible from the street can fall under the Landmarks Preservation Commission, so check before ordering a style that differs from the original.
Do you install the opener with the door?
Yes, if you want one. Pairing a new door with a new opener means the springs, balance and opener limits are all set together. If you only need the opener, a new opener on its own is a smaller job.
