Damaged panels

When garage door panel replacement is the right repair

A sectional garage door is built from horizontal panels joined by hinges, and each panel rides in the track on rollers. When one panel is damaged, the rest of the door usually stays sound, so garage door panel replacement means swapping the damaged one and leaving the others in place. The common causes are a car backing into the door, a stray basketball or snow shovel, a cracked bottom panel where road water and salt have rusted the steel, and an opener that kept pushing after the door jammed.

A bent panel is more than a cosmetic problem. A deep crease weakens the panel along the hinge line, which makes the door twist as it travels and puts extra strain on the rollers, the track and the opener. A shallow dent in a steel panel may only need to be assessed and left alone. We look at how the panel flexes, whether the hinges still sit square, and whether the door still closes with an even gap, then give you a straight answer on which repair fits.

What we look at

What decides whether we repair or replace the panel

Depth and location of the damage

A shallow ding on a middle panel is a different job from a crease through a hinge line. Damage near the top or bottom panel also affects the strut, the weather seal and the cable bracket.

Panel material

Steel, insulated steel, aluminum with glass, wood and fiberglass each repair differently. Insulated steel panels cannot be pounded straight because the foam backing is glued to the skin.

Finding a matching panel

We match the manufacturer, model, panel height, color and style where a panel is still made. If it has been discontinued, we say so, and talk through the options.

Hinges, rollers and struts on the damaged panel

Impact bends the hardware as well. We check each hinge and roller beside the damage and replace the bent ones along with the panel.

The condition of the rest of the door

If several panels are cracked or the door is old and faded, a new door can be worth more than patching it. We lay out both choices with what each involves.

The process

How a panel replacement goes

  1. 01

You tell us what happened to the door

Describe the impact, the size of the dent or crack, and whether the door still moves. Photos of the panel's label, if you can find one, help us bring the right part.

  2. 02

We come out and examine the panel

A uniformed technician checks the damage, the hinges, the springs and the balance, and explains what each finding means before starting.

  3. 03

You hear the options and the price

We quote panel replacement against a repair or a new door. The price depends on the door type, the panel size, the matching difficulty and what the hardware needs. You have the number before any work begins.

  4. 04

We swap the panel and test the door

We release the tension safely, replace the panel and hardware, rebalance the door and run it through the full travel. The work is backed by a parts-and-labor warranty.

Dented or cracked panel?

Describe the dent or crack and tell us the make of your door if you know it, and we will say whether a single panel will do the job.

Common questions

Panel questions homeowners ask before calling

Can one damaged garage door panel be replaced by itself?
Yes, on a sectional door a single panel can be unbolted and swapped without touching the rest. The limit is availability: if the manufacturer still makes that panel in the same style and color, it works well. If not, we discuss alternatives such as a similar panel, repainting, or a new door.
How much does it cost to fix a damaged garage door?
It depends on the panel type, the door size, whether a matching panel exists and how much of the hardware was bent. A simple middle panel on a standard steel door sits at one end, and an insulated or specialty panel at the other. We give you the quote after inspecting the door and before any work begins.
Is it better to repair a dent or replace the panel?
A shallow dent that has not creased the steel can often be left alone or touched up. Once the panel is creased through, cracked or pulling away from its hinge, replacement is the safer choice because the weakened panel strains the rest of the door. The technician checks how the panel flexes and tells you which applies.
Is it safe to keep using the door with a damaged panel?
A light dent is usually fine to use. A cracked or buckled panel should not be run, because the door can jam in the track and the opener may keep pushing against it. Stop using the opener, keep the door closed and locked if it will close, and tell us what you are seeing.
Can you replace a panel without replacing the tracks?
Usually the tracks stay where they are, since they are separate from the panels. If the impact also bent a track, we straighten or replace that part. Springs and cables are checked at the same visit because a jam often strains them as well.
Will homeowners insurance cover a broken garage door?
That depends on the policy and on what caused the damage, so ask your insurer directly. We can explain in plain words what was damaged and what the repair involves, which helps when you speak with them.
When is a whole new door the better choice?
When several panels are damaged, the door is worn or faded, or the matching panel is no longer made. A garage door installation can also make sense if the door has been repaired repeatedly. We lay out both routes and let you decide.
How long does a panel replacement take?
A single panel is usually finished in one visit, since the door is released, the panel swapped and the door rebalanced and tested in a single appointment. Extra hinge or track work can add to that. We explain the scope before we start.
